Operations against illicit activities and for the protection of minors: a review of military operations in northeastern Colombia

Afectaciones a econom铆as il铆citas y protecci贸n de menores: balance de las operaciones militares en el nororiente colombiano

The ongoing operations conducted by the troops has led to the recovery of 37 forcibly recruited minors, as well as the neutralization of the criminal activities of the groups that commit crimes in the departments of Santander, Norte de Santander and Sothern Cesar.

Within the framework of the Ayacucho plan and within the framework of military operations, troops of the Second Division of Colombian National Army, in coordination with the National Navy, the Colombian Aerospace Force and with the support of the National Police and the Attorney General's Office, have carried out operations so far this year to increase security in northeastern Colombia, strategic resources, protect communities and strike organized armed groups in a powerful way.

Indicators in the fight against illicit activities (drug trafficking, extortion, fuel theft and transnational organized crime, among others), as well as damage against organized armed groups and the neutralization of explosives are some of the factors in which there was an increase.

In military operations against drug trafficking, more than 10 tons of cocaine hydrochloride and 16 thousand gallons of cocaine in process were found by troops, which translates into an increase in the findings by 200%, compared to the same period last year. As for drug production laboratories, more than 230 of them have been destroyed this year, 142 tons of solid precursors and 390 thousand gallons of liquid precursors have been found.

The work of the military operation of the Army troops who have counted on the activity of the soldiers mainly in the Catatumbo region, where the factors of instability are vehemently fought. More than three tons of explosives, 387 rudimentary grenades, 2625 improvised explosive devices and more than 730 anti-personnel mines have been destroyed in this area of the country.

The dynamics of the military operation carried out by the troops in the departments of Santander, Norte de Santander Department, south of Cesar and the municipality of Yondo, in Antioquia, has led to the arrest of 154 members of the organized armed groups (GAO) ELN and  GAO Clan del Golfo and the residual organized armed group (GAO-r) Structure 33. In the same way, 157 surrenders to justice have been made, in the frame of the military operation of several combats.

It was in the same way possible to recover 37 minors who had been forcibly recruited, this being a significant success, since many of these young people returned to their homes and, through the relevant institutions, their rights were restored.

In the same way, during this 2025, soldiers in the framework of military operations have found 63 thousand ammunition, 381 short- and long-range weapons, military accessory material and communications.

In the frame of the Amazonas Plan, it was possible to find 433 cubic meters of wood and plant 136 thousand seedlings.
