After the destruction of the coast Guard Station of Providencia and the facilities of the Authority of the Port by the hurricane Iota, and in the framework of the reconstruction of the island directed by the Presidency of the Republic, the Navy of Colombia carried out the project of recovery of the coast Guard Station and Sea Traffic Control tower to provide safety to the maritime routes and communications with the island of San Andr茅s, as well as to safeguard the life of the islanders and tourists who will visit Providencia.
It should be noted that this recovery will be carried out on the terrains of the Naval institution, thanks to a modernization project proposed 10 years ago, to improve the living conditions of the Navy crew members who have been working in Providencia since 1993. This project counts on the participation of the island community through a previous consultation that was carried out in 2015 providing all the stages of the consultative and managerial process by the Ministry of the Interior.
The Naval Institution seeks to provide support for the recommendations and observations of the community, adjusted the project in terms of optimization of space while keeping the same characteristics of size; it carried out the matrix of impacts, whose base corresponds to the collection of the main issues set out in the framework of the process of prior consultation; and follow-up meetings of the agreements in 2017, the presentation of the project in 2019 and 2020, and establishes a meeting this 2021. This meeting is rescheduled due to the health emergency in 2020.
This project has the environmental feasibility for the construction and operation of the activities of the Coast Guard Station and Maritime Traffic Control tower, as well as permits for forest use, surface water concession, and domestic wastewater disposal; as well as the concession for the construction of the pier, according to the guidelines of the Territorial Planning Scheme of Providencia.
The reconstruction of the Coast Guard and Maritime Traffic Control Station of Providencia will contribute to safeguard, protect and provide safety to the life of the community and tourists visiting the island, for its comprehensive development.
