Five Nicaraguan nationals were arrested and 182 kilograms of illegal fishing were found by troops.
As part of maritime control and surveillance patrols, the Colombian Navy, through the Specific Command of San Andrés and Providencia, detected a lobster boat named Cap Loo, which was fishing in the Quitasueño bank, 127 kilometers of the island of Providencia, without authorization of the Colombian authorities.
The Naval Institution carried out the visit procedure to the ship, finding five people on board, as well as fishing elements and fishing resource. Immediately, the arrested and the material were taken on the ARC ship Providencia to the island of San Andrés to continue to conduct the identification and review process, with the accompaniment of the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries, the Corporation for Sustainable Development – CORALINA, and Migración Colombia.
Once at the dock, 154 kilograms of lobster, five kilograms of egg lobster, thirteen kilograms of sea cucumber, six kilograms of stingray fin and four kilograms of King Crab were found by troops. In the same way, fishing elements such as an air compressor, a 300-meter hose, two masks, two rudimentary hooks and two pairs of fins were found by troops.
It is important to note that, according to the Agreement No. 002 of 2019 issued by the CORAL environmental authority, the Archipelago Department has Sea Protected Areas, including the Quitasueño bank, declared a conservation area for its unique biodiversity and high ecological value.
The Colombian Navy, through the Specific Command of San Andrés and Providencia, will continue to use its resources to work for the protection of the Seaflower Biosphere Reserve, reaffirming its commitment to the fishing people who carry out this ancestral profession in the department.
