In a coordinated operation conducted by the National Security Investigations Agency of the United States –HSI– and INTERPOL Colombia, alias Calvo and alias Hernando were extradited, accused of integrating a transnational criminal network specialized in the trafficking of irregular migrants in the Colombian Caribbean.
Both individuals were arrested last November 30, 2023 during a joint, coordinated and interagency operation conducted by the National Navy, Colombian National Army, the Colombian Aerospace Force, the Attorney General's Office and Migration Colombia, within the framework of a specialized operation led by Naval Intelligence, which led to establishing their direct participation in illicit activities that put in danger maritime security and the integrity of migrants.
Alias Calvo would be in charge of approaching military personnel of the Naval Institution in order to obtain sensitive information that would facilitate the illicit movement of ships. He in the same way coordinated the departure of boats loaded with irregular migrants from San Andrés to Nicaragua, coordinating directly with alias Hernando, who would be the main ringleader of this organization.
For his part, alias Hernando, would have played the role of coordinator and guide, in charge of capturing migrants and providing them illegal routes both through San Andrés Islas and through the Darién rainforest, with a final destination in Nicaragua. His role within the criminal structure positioned him as one of those responsible for the logistics and direction of these operations.
It is relevant to note that these two individuals become the first Colombian citizens to be extradited to the United States for the crime of migrant smuggling, an action that sets a judicial precedent for the country and strengthens international cooperation against organized crime.
