Fishermen who had been drifting for three days were rescued in the Southern Pacific Ocean

Nariño. With little energy and no food, after three days of drifting in the South Pacific Ocean, four fishermen made calls for help when noticing the presence of the National Navy Units, who carried out patrol operations, in the area of El Viudo, in the municipality of Tumaco - in the department of Nariño. The military personnel rescued them, gave them medical assistance and moved them to a safe place.

According to what the fishermen said, two adults and two minors had gone fishing and when they were traveling by El Guabal sector towards Tumaco, due to the difficult weather conditions, a wave hit the boat, damaged the engine and left them behind. The boat did not have communication equipment, security elements, or food.

After three days, the Units of the Marine Infantry Brigade No.4, attached to the Joint Task Force "Hercules", which carry out operations in the area, heard their shouts and approached to help them, providing them with first aid and hydration.

The men were taken aboard the National Navy Unit and towed the boat to its facilities in Tumaco, where they received food and contacted with their families. Later, they were transported to a hospital center in the municipality, where the medical staff found them healthy and released them to return to their homes.

During 2019, the National Navy has provided assistance to 77 people who were rescued alive, in 12 operations at sea.
