Bogotá D.C. The Superintendence of Industry and Commerce granted the Central Military Hospital a patent to the invention titled: "System for electro-stimulation as a therapeutic alternative for patients with fractures of long bones that require an external tutor".
This creation, patented last August 13, 2018, was made thinking about the need to provide patients with traumatic injuries, such as traumas from traffic accidents or war wounds, better recovery times.
The research was carried out by Dr. Carlos Satizabal, Orthopedist and Traumatologist of the Central Military Hospital, current Head of the Trauma and Bone Reconstruction Clinic; and John Saúl Camacho, Surgeon of the National University of Colombia and Master in Biomedical Sciences of the Universidad de los Andes.
In 2011, the academic research project won the research prize at the institution and thanks to this, the research work of the operation was conducted for 3 years and today it became the first patent of the Central Military Hospital.
"The procedure helps to accelerate and improve healing by electro-stimulation implemented at the focus of the fracture and the tissue already regenerated, in cases of reconstruction for lengthening or bone transport," explained the Orthopedist and Traumatologist, Carlos Satizabal.
This device contributes to have a better time of consolidation of the fracture and bone regeneration, therefore decreases complications associated to the duration of the classic treatment with tutors, faster rehabilitation, with the consequent reduction of costs for the patient and for the hospital; it presents an improved alternative to the operations that are currently on the market.
The Central Military Hospital started the Scientific Research Unit in 2010, demonstrating its capacity and leadership in education and innovation. Currently, another patent for a measurement operation is in its final stage, and two other processes are being initiated to be presented at the Superintendence of Industry and Commerce.
