Colombian navy and Panamanian authorities conduct search for shipwrecked migrants in the gulf of Urabá

Units of the Colombian Navy in coordination with Panamanian authorities carry out the search and rescue operation of passengers traveling on a ship that shipwrecked in Cabo Tiburón, in the municipality of Acandí (Department of Chocó). The ship reportedly sailed with approximately 30 irregular migrants, including Haitian, Cuban and Venezuelan citizens.

At the time, it is known that 21 people were rescued (18 Cubans, one Venezuelan and two Haitians); and three bodies of adult women were found by troops (two Haitians and one Cuban).

Once the Naval Institution learned of the emergency, it deployed a Coastal Patrol Ship, Naval Units, Coast Guard Units and crew of the Coast Guard post of Sapzurro to the area, in order to establish the search and support the humanitarian assistance work for the castaways, who were traveling in a ship not authorized to transport migrants.

The National Navy, with the support of Panamanian authorities and fishermen in the region, continues to conduct the search and rescue of six missing migrants, three adults and three minors, who were on board the boat that reportedly sailed from a clandestine point near Necoclí (Antioquia).

The Colombian Navy will maintain search and rescue efforts in the area, while calling on the community to provide valuable information through line 146 to find the people who remain missing.

In the same way, it invites the community of sailors and inhabitants of the region to report any type of clandestine activity of illegal transport of migrants.
