This year the Coast Guard units of Tumaco have safeguarded the lives of 39 people, who have been rescued in different emergencies at sea, on the Pacific coast of Nariño.
The timely call of the community and the rapid reaction of the units of the Coast Guard Station of Tumaco, led to safeguard the lives of 10 people during two search and rescue operations in the waters of the South Pacific waters in the department of Nariño.
The first incident was reported approximately 31 kilometers south of Gorgona Island, where four men who were conducting fishing operations got adrift after the boat in which they were traveling had mechanical failures in the outboard engines. Once the emergency was reported, a Rapid Reaction Unit of the Coast Guard Station of Tumaco was deployed, which after two hours of searching managed to find the boat and safeguard the lives of the four men, who were traveling in the boat.
The second incident was reported at night in the sector known as El Viudo, in the Bay of Tumaco, where six people were adrift after mechanical failures in the boat in which they were traveling; again, the timely call for help of the community, led to the reaction of the Coast Guard units and the prompt rescue of people in the midst of poor visibility at sea.
The ten rescued people were taken to Tumaco, where military medical personnel of the Colombian navy, checked their state of Health, finding all in good condition.
The Port Authority of Tumaco and the Coast Guard units of the Colombian Navy remind the inhabitants that the use of security elements during maritime transit is a determining factor in safeguarding life in the event of an accident, especially the use of life jackets. In the same way, making a pre-sail review of the condition of the engines and carrying the tools for them; these are measures that contribute to prevent mechanical emergencies during navigation.
The Naval institution ratifies its commitment to comprehensive maritime security in the South Pacific of Nariño, strengthening and intensifying daily controls of ships that sail the sea and river waters in this area of the country.
