Indigenous community Wayuu soldiers serving Colombia

The course of professional soldiers No.66 counts 12 young people who belong to the Wayuu community. We tell you a small fragment of the story of three of them.

The Wayuu people is an ancestral indigenous people in the north of Colombia, in La Guajira, in Resguardos, the inhabitants of this area of the country, represent a historical and cultural asset with an autochthonous language that defines them and recalls the importance of preserving their traditional language.

José Ángel Ipuana Ipuana is 21 years old and belongs to the Guayabital reserve of Albania. He is the youngest of 4 brothers and says that the support of his family motivated him to pursue his dream of being a Soldier.

He says that since he was little he saw soldiers and said that when he became big he would be like them. So he decided to do his military service to confirm whether the Army was all he had imagined. He defined his military status in the Air Defense Artillery Battalion No.1 and at the first opportunity he had to begin his training as a soldier he did not think twice.

While there he met Diego de Jesús Ipuana Ipuana from the Ranchería Aitiamana in Uribia. This young man, in addition to sharing his surname and age, in the same way shares his dream of serving the country as a Soldier. He is the eldest of nine brothers and says he hopes to be an example of struggle, dedication and perseverance for each of them.

He says entering the Army taught him to be a man of discipline and now he can't imagine being away of the institution without wearing the uniform. What he likes most is that a soldier can support civilians, helping the most vulnerable.

Next to him we have in the same way Luis Alberto Tile Uriana, a 22-year-old man from Maicao, in the Ranchería Aulaulia. He is waiting for the start of the course of Combat Rescuers, because he knows that the mission of these men is vital for the wellbeing of the troop in case someone is wounded or injured in the fulfillment of the mission. In addition, he fully understands that he will in the same way be able to help the most vulnerable anywhere in the country where he is designated by the National Army. For the three of them, this is the beginning of a great dream.

Initially, they will be part of the Anti-Drug Brigade No.2 that will begin to work in Norte de Santander. These young people complement the National Army's fight against drug trafficking to meet the Government's stated goal of eradicating illicit plantations.
