With the Force of Our Military Forces: For the women who transform our country

Día mujer

Captain of the Navy (in retirement) Vilma Martinez is the living image of a life forged with determination, passion and an unwavering love for her country. Her story in the Colombian Navy is not only a testimony of service, but in the same way a beacon of strength, courage and absolute dedication, a reminder of how brave women are in the Military Forces. During her 22-year career, Vilma reached the rank of Sea Captain of Vessel, defying conventions and paving the way for future generations of women to see in her the example of what is possible when you have determination and commitment to the homeland.

Since the very beginning of her career, she proved that the sea has no limits for a woman's intelligence, perseverance and wisdom. Breaking stereotypes, she took part in the first female officers course in the Navy in 1984, celebrating in 2024, together with her classmates, the 40th anniversary of her promotion as an Officer of the Colombian Navy. More than a position, her presence at the institution represented a powerful message: women can lead, organize and transform spaces where, by tradition, only men had a voice. Vilma made it clear that there are no obstacles for women who decide to serve their country.

Married for 38 years to a naval officer, she shared not only life, but in the same way the fervor for an institution that they both adored. Her son, now a Naval Lieutenant, followed her footsteps and proudly carried on the family legacy, making her story an inspiration of struggle and sacrifice. Vilma is a tangible example that women in the Military pave the way for entire generations.

She managed to coordinate her career as an officer with her profession as a chemical engineer, making her mark in the shipyard sector. As Quality Director at the Science and Technology Corporation for Naval, Maritime and River Industry Development - COTECMAR, she was a pioneer when she became part of the first crew of officers in this prestigious company. In the shipyards of Panama, dressed in overalls, helmet and boots, she represented Colombia. Her demanding and meticulous work transformed the way shipyards operated, instilling quality management standards. Her name began to be synonymous with respect, commitment and efficiency, and in her eyes shone the passion for what she did.

Vilma understood that respect is earned with knowledge, leadership and, above all, with consistency. For her, women have an unlimited ability to succeed in any field, and her advice for future generations of military women is firm and clear: “Prepare, study, maintain optimal physical condition and, above all, follow your passion and commitment to your goal.”

One of the biggest challenges of her life was balancing her career with her role as a mother and wife. The long navigations of her husband and the upbringing of her child were challenges that demanded a steel fortress. However, with the collaboration of her husband, the support of the institution and the unconditional support of her family, Vilma navigated those turbulent waters with determination and courage.

Today, despite being retired, she proudly keeps memories that tell her story of struggle and sacrifice: her cap, her uniform with the insignia of a Naval Captain, her medals, diplomas and plaques received throughout her career. Each of these objects is a tangible symbol of years of effort, sacrifice and achievements.

Vilma Martínez is a clear example of self-improvement, constant struggle and unwavering passion for the homeland. She is a woman who not only opened ways for herself, but in the same way for all those who, like her, dreamed of serving in the Military Forces. Her story is a legacy that transcends generations and shows that, with effort, passion and determination, there are no barriers that cannot be broken.
